About Our Program

What are the benefits of Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy

Retrain your body.

Constraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) focuses on engaging the weaker limb using a specialized,  research-based protocol to retrain your limb and engage you in real life activities.

These could include eating at a restaurant independently, bathing and dressing, reduced need for assistance and increased independence in your daily life.

Regain your confidence.

In our clinic, CIMT helps you to practice movement patterns and daily activities that increase your confidence in your own body.

Your therapy includes regular follow-ups for 6 months post clinic to follow your continued success.

Your work at our CIMT clinic involves your care partner and work to do at home. The collaboration between you, your care partner and our therapists leads to improved results.

Rewire your brain.

When it comes to loss of motor control due to stroke, traumatic brain injury, or as a result of multiple sclerosis, research shows that the  intensive approach of (or utilizing) CIMT is a proven model for "rewiring" the brain.

Our Program

What is Constraint Induced Movement Therapy?

Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy, or CI Therapy helps “rewire” the brain in adults after stroke, brain injury or when addressing the physical changes of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Often these individuals have persistent impaired use of one side of the body. CIMT therapy develops neural pathways in the brain while intensively training motor patterns allowing individuals to improve their motor activities.

What is the program like?

Each participant is evaluated to determine specific outcome goals to improve functional use and movement of the affected side of the body. Protocols vary for the arm and leg. For the arm, the participant wears a cloth mitt on the unaffected hand. It's worn through both the 2-3 week program at home and in therapy sessions. For the leg, the participant has specific targeted training for the more affected leg during the 2-3 week program, with a focus on increased function and confidence in using the leg in everyday situations.

Therapy sessions are  3-4 hours a day over 2-3 weeks. During these 2-3 weeks the participant also performs exercises in their personal environments with extensive functional tracking of developing skills and movements.

Care Partners

One key component to success is the relationship between the stroke survivor and their Care Partner. As part of our program, we create an agreement between the participant and the Care Partner on adherence to program guidelines and provide and follow through with daily home diaries of activities. Our goal is to empower the individual to take over more of their personal care and regain more of their independence.

Client Testimonial

A review of my experience at CIMT Atlanta by D. H.

"I have Multiple Sclerosis (MS) which was diagnosed roughly 12 years ago. My MS effects my lower extremities. Significantly impacting my ability to walk, maintain balance and

reducing my endurance. Since my diagnosis I’ve continued to search for

alternatives to taking more pills. Through my research I discovered something called

CIMT or Constraint Induced Movement Therapy. A therapy originally designed for

Stroke recovery but now also used to help people with MS regain some of their

functionality. Through my research I found an organization in Atlanta that was

just starting their therapy program. After contacting CIMT Atlanta, I was

fortunate enough to be one of their 1st patients in early January 2022.

My experience and results were great. Due to my situation, they targeted my

lower extremities. The program lasted 2 full weeks or 10 days of therapy and

guidance. The therapist, Julia McVicker was very well prepared and she designed a program that targeted my specific needs. Every morning we reviewed my homework assignment from the day before, completed an assessment my functional performance and confidence of various skill. Each day, under her supervision she instructed me to perform various activities known as

shaping activities and functional activities. Each were performance driven

activities that challenged my focus to do them correctly as well as my endurance

to perform the task multiple times in a defined time. As with MS, many simple tasks

become difficult but going though this program improved my ability and willingness to do

everyday tasks. I find myself initiating activities where I previously would shy away from. This program takes effort and focus but if you truly want to improve your functionality you need to go to CIMT ATLANTA."
